Visiting Cavea de la Huchette: Is It Really Worth The Hype

If you are a jazz lover planning a trip to Paris, there is absolutely no doubt you will come across Caveau de la Huchette, listed as one of the best jazz bars in the city. A BIG statement, especially for the city of love. However, like myself, I am sure you have been fooled many times before with businesses and attractions claiming to be “the best” in the city. And after a while of disappointment, it becomes hard to know what is true, what is marketing, and what is good old-fashioned opinion.
So I took upon the hard task (it was not hard at all) of visiting the so-called best jazz bar in Paris, Caveau de la Huchette. Ask me how to pronounce it and I might just cry. Here we explore the important things: is it actually worth the hype, who is it best for, what vibe to expect, is there a dress code, and do you need tickets?

What Is Caveau de la Huchette?
Le Caveau de la Huchette, is a popular underground Jazz club located in Paris’s Latin Quarter, at 5 Rue de la Huchette. Le Caveau de la Huchette isnt just a popular TikTok spot, or a overhyped jazz club, it is rooted deep in history and cinema. In the 16th century, the building was used for secret society meetings. It was also home to the Club des Cordeliers, a radical political group from the French Revolution who championed the rights of the working class and used street protests to ensure the government never betrayed the revolutionary goal of total equality. Today the building continues to make its mark, including appearances in La La Land, a film I have grown to actually really quite like. Since 1946, the club has been referred to as the “temple” of jazz and swing.
What To Expect When You Arrive At Caveau de la Huchette
When you first arrive at Caveau de la Huchette; expect queues, so get there early! The queues to enter can be massive, and it took us about an hour to get through the doors (even in February).
But when you do manage to enter you will walk into the upstairs bar. Downstairs you will find the more clubby, dancy area, where the live music lives and the atmosphere is sensational.
Don’t Be Fooled
Don’t be fooled – the queues right outside the door look short, but take a peak around the corner and you will see the real line!
The bouncers will tell you where to go when you arrive at the door, but before you look like a fool – take my free advice and just check you aren’t about to jump the queue.
But please do not let that put you off. It is worth it. Get there 30 minutes to an hour before opening so you can line up and get through without too much of a wait.
What Is The Vibe Of Caveau de la Huchette?
If you are expecting a sit-down, appreciate-the-jazz, clap and chat kind of bar, this is not the place for you. The vibe is very lively, very busy, and very young. There are older people scattered around and they are absolutely made to feel welcome, but the main body of the crowd sits around 20 to 30 years old.
When I visited, I felt like I fit in perfectly. I didn’t feel too old, I didn’t feel too young, and I visited on the weekend of my 23rd birthday. I would highly recommend this jazz club if you are looking for somewhere to get a little tipsy, enjoy a more sophisticated atmosphere than a nightclub, and experience some good, upbeat, soulful, jazzy (mind the pun) live music.
The thing that really surprised me about the club was how current it feels. You do not walk in and think “this is an outdated jazz club.” It feels very with the times, done in the most sophisticated, lively way while completely keeping with the original building and vibe of the place. It is really, really cool. And the fact it is underground, in cellar-like spaces, makes it even cooler. It is truly unique and genuinely something incredible.
Is It Best To Visit In A Group Or Solo?
If you love a good night out but also like it to feel relatively sophisticated, Caveau de la Huchette is perfect for you, either in a group or not.
I went as just a pair, me and my friend, no big group, and we had a fabulous time. We didn’t feel like we needed more people with us, we were perfect as a two-man band. That said, there were plenty of large groups there too, so it is genuinely flexible for all sizes.
I can imagine it being incredible with a bigger group, but it is also the type of place I would also recommend visiting even as a solo traveller. If you are travelling solo, here’s my biggest tip; when you arrive grab yourself a drink, and head in the direction of the toilets, there you will find a little stone spiral staircase, go down there and find yourself a seat and table – this is the perfect place to be to not feel overwhelmed as a solo traveller but to still enjoy the vibe. In this section of the club, you can see the dance floor, see the music, hear the music and vibe with the atmosphere, without putting your head first into a crowd of strangers.
Is The Music Actually Any Good?
Now, if you are visiting a jazz bar/club you will be hoping that the music is great right? Well you are in luck because honestly it was so so good. The band were incredibly talented, not only with the music they could make but also with the energy they brought and how they interacted with the crowd. You could tell that they truly loved what they were doing!
At one point they even brought a random woman from the crowd up on stage to make music with them, which was just the coolest thing to see, and she was incredibly talented too!
Upstairs VS Downstairs: Where To Actually Be
I’ll be honest, the upstairs disappointed me slightly. For the real atmosphere you need to be downstairs where the live music is. Yes, that sounds obvious, but I mention it because the upstairs has a TV showing the band below rather than its own act, and I think having a second band up there would have been incredible. As it stands, the upstairs is fine for a drink but it’s not where the night happens.
Downstairs, however, is like a packet of sardines. Be prepared for that, but this is where the true vibe is. There are some benches downstairs next to the dance floor, but there was basically no room on them when we visited, and the actual dancefloor was absolutely heaving. If you are claustrophobic or do not like small, compact spaces, that is your fair warning. For everyone else, it is part of what makes it brilliant.
For those of you who are claustrophobic, you can follow the same advice I would give a solo traveller – when you arrive grab yourself a drink, and head in the direction of the toilets, there you will find a little stone spiral staircase, go down there and find yourself a seat and table – this is the perfect place to be to not feel overwhelmed but to still enjoy the vibe. For someone who is claustrophobic this will likely be your best bet.
Do You Need Tickets For Caveau de la Hicheette?
No, you do not need to book in advance. Caveau de la Huchette does not take bookings at all. It works entirely on a first-come, first-served basis, so here is what actually happens when you arrive:
- The bouncer will direct you to the queue (or you can figure it out yourself from the line of people likely on the street).
- When you reach the front, you will be marked with an invisible stamp. This stamp becomes visible under certain light inside and means only people with it can get through to the ticket office.
- At the box office you pay your entry fee, just like any club. I paid 16 euro, but you can check the prices here. They are really reasonably priced tickets – even on the weekends.
Does Caveau de la Huchette Have A Dress Code?
As much as Caveau de la Huchette is lovely, classy, and sophisticated, there is not a specific dress code you have to meet. Just be practical and realistic about the vibe of the place.
When I went I wore a nice top, jeans, and kitten heels. I would say that sums up the vibe perfectly. You could dress up more or dress down a little and either would work, but if you are planning an outfit, a middle ground is the sweet spot.
For a guy, some nice jeans and a shirt would be perfectly expectable.
Is Caveau de la Huchette Actually Worth It?
There is a lot of hype around Caveau de la Huchette, and a lot of people saying it is the best jazz club in Paris. I cannot confirm or deny that because it is the only jazz bar in Paris I have managed to try. But what I can say is that it is absolutely worth the visit, especially if you are in your 20s or 30s.
Caveau has become a real social media hotspot, especially on TikTok. Its classic cave-like dancefloor and neon sign are iconic and very recognisable. But that has not taken anything away from the place itself. The soul of it is still completely intact, and social media isnt lying when it says it’s a really cool place – it is!
Final Verdict
If you are in Paris, take a night out here. You will not regret it. It’s worth your time, 100%.
For my 23rd birthday, I wanted to do something memorable and special, and to be completely honest the whole reason I decided to go to Paris was to visit this incredible Jazz Club, and boy it did not disappoint. The memories made there will live with me forever, and honestly, the club added so much to one of my favourite holidays ever!
I do think Caveau de la Huchette is one of those rare places where the hype is actually earned. It is historic, atmospheric, lively, and genuinely cool, and the fact it is literally underground in a centuries-old cellar is just the cherry on top. The music is great too!
Get there early, embrace the queue, head straight downstairs, and enjoy every second of it. And if you want more help planning your Paris trip, check out our Paris travel planner for honest, firsthand recommendations across the city and a place for you to plan your trip.

Live jazz and swing, performed by resident and guest bands. It is upbeat, energetic, and very danceable. This is not background music, it is the main event.
Absolutely. I went as a pair and we had a brilliant time without needing a big group around us. Solo visitors will feel just as comfortable given the lively, shared atmosphere of the dancefloor. As always be safe.
