Visiting Amsterdam in April is one of the best times to explore the city and its stunning surroundings. This is when the famous Amsterdam tulip season is in full bloom, transforming the Netherlands into a colourful sea of flowers, making it an unmissable experience for any traveller.
Amsterdam is widely known as one of Europe’s top must-visit cities, with its rich history, iconic canals, modern liberal culture, and countless things to see and do. When most people think of Amsterdam, they picture the Anne Frank House, the Heineken Experience, endless bikes, winding canals, and yes, even the Red Light District or the cannabis culture.
But Amsterdam offers so much more, especially in April. During this magical time of year, the city showcases a softer, more picturesque side that stands out even compared to other European destinations. After my recent spring trip to the Netherlands, I can confidently say that Amsterdam is a city you can visit over and over again and never grow tired of.
On this particular trip, I skipped the typical party scene and instead crafted an itinerary perfect for girls in their 20s who love slow, wholesome travel, think tulip fields, iced coffees, indie bakeries, and charming strolls through the city. One of the best things to do in Amsterdam in April is to visit the Keukenhof Gardens and explore the nearby tulip fields. One of the most delightful surprises during my visit was the picturesque windmill that sits beautifully among the flowers. However, be warned—the line to climb the windmill can get quite long, especially during peak hours. If this is something you really want to do, plan accordingly to avoid waiting for too long!
Next to the windmill, you’ll find a quaint boat ride experience. For just 10 euros, you can hop aboard a boat and be rowed through the tulip fields, soaking in the beautiful landscape from a unique vantage point. It’s an experience I wish I had done during my visit and will definitely be on my list for next time.

While Keukenhof Gardens is an unforgettable experience, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

Amsterdam Canal Cruise with Pizza and Unlimited Drinks
One of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip to Amsterdam was the canal cruise. Not only did we get a fantastic tour of Amsterdam by water, but we were also treated to unlimited drinks (both alcoholic and soft) and a delicious New York-style pizza. With stunning views of the city from the water, this Amsterdam canal cruise quickly became one of my favourite activities.
The boat tour lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes, giving us plenty of time to relax, enjoy the sights, and indulge in some delicious food and drinks. When you board the boat, you choose your pizza from a selection of around five different options. From what I remember, the drink choices ranged from beer and wine to Coca-Cola, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. Plus, there’s a bowl of mixed nuts on the table to snack on as you cruise through the scenic canals.
With the combination of unlimited drinks, great company, tasty food, and perfect weather, this canal boat cruise is an absolute must-do in Amsterdam. However, keep in mind that these cruises tend to fill up quickly, so if you’re planning to experience it for yourself, make sure to book in advance! There are loads of different canal cruises you can choose from all ranging in different prices. Tony’s Chocolonely Factory: A Chocolate Lover’s Dream in Amsterdam
If you’re a chocolate lover, you’ve likely heard of Tony’s Chocolonely—a beloved brand known for its ethically produced chocolate. But did you know you can visit their Tony’s Chocolonely Factory in Amsterdam? For just 9.99 euros, you can tour this quirky, underground factory, where you’ll have the chance to personalize your own chocolate and packaging. You’ll even get a special gift to take home as a delicious memento of your time in Amsterdam!
The experience is a bit small-scale, but definitely fun and unique. While the process involves waiting in line to personalize your chocolate, it’s worth it when you get to create a flavor that’s totally your own. Though it might seem pricey for what you get, the fun and satisfaction of making your own chocolate makes it a memorable experience.
Tony’s Chocolonely Factory is also a family-friendly activity—perfect for parents with kids who love chocolate and sweets! The shop is open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, but for the chocolate-making experience, the hours are 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM to allow enough time to prepare and pick up your chocolate.
Bun Bun Store: The Best Buns in Amsterdam
For those with a serious sweet tooth, Bun Bun is a must-visit spot in Amsterdam. As the name suggests, this tiny but fantastic bakery specializes in buns, but these aren’t your average buns, they are hands down the most amazing buns I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot coming from someone who’s not particularly fond of bakery treats.
From classic cinnamon buns to more adventurous flavours like hazelnut, cheesecake, and pistachio, every bite is pure bliss. Once you try one of these buns, you won’t stop thinking about them!
Located in the trendy Jordaan district, Bun Bun is a small shop with room for only two people inside. It’s so popular that you’ll likely encounter a line, but trust me, it’s worth the wait. And for coffee lovers, there’s a café right next door called Luuks Café, serving up what is possibly the best coffee I’ve ever had in Amsterdam. Whether you’re into iced vanilla lattes with oat milk (girlies unite) or other coffee classics, don’t miss this spot!
Grab a Coffee from Luuks Cafe: A Hidden Gem in Amsterdam
If you’re a coffee lover, then Luuks Cafe is a must-visit spot in Amsterdam. This cozy little café offers all the essentials you could need, serving up delicious, high-quality coffee at a reasonable price. With just a couple of seats inside and a small bench outside, Luuks Cafe has a charming, intimate vibe that makes it the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee while exploring the city.
One thing that surprised me about Luuks Cafe was that it offered… pea milk?, a dairy-free option I’d never heard of before! While I was tempted to try it, I stuck with my classic iced vanilla latte with oat milk, I know, a bit basic, but sometimes you just can’t beat the classics. Whatever your coffee preferences, Luuks has something for every palate.
Though small, Luuks Cafe is a hidden gem that every coffee drinker should check out. If you’re in the area, make sure to stop by for a quick, delicious coffee fix. Trust me—you’ll be glad you did. Yum, yum, yum!

Amsterdam is home to a variety of markets, with something to discover almost every day of the week. But if you’re visiting in Amsterdam, the flower market—also known as Bloemenmarkt—is an absolute must-see. Located along the Singel Canal, this picturesque floating flower market is the perfect place to explore the vibrant beauty of flowers and enjoy a tranquil, wholesome experience.
Bloemenmarkt is the world’s only floating flower market, where vendors set up shop on houseboats, creating a uniquely charming atmosphere. The market sells an impressive range of flowers, from iconic tulips and geraniums to a variety of other blooms. Depending on the season, you might even find Christmas trees during the holiday season! Whether you’re after flower bulbs to plant at home or a fresh bouquet, Bloemenmarkt has something for every flower lover.

Originally a working class area, the Jordaan has evolved into one of the city’s most desirable spots, full of independent boutiques, art galleries, cosy cafés and artisan bakeries. Every corner you turn offers something beautiful, whether it’s a vintage bicycle leaning against a canal railing, a balcony overflowing with flowers or a peaceful hidden courtyard you’d never expect to find.
It’s also home to some of the best hidden gems in the city. You’ll find Bun Bun, the best cinnamon bun shop in Amsterdam, and Luuks Café, the perfect place for an iced oat latte (this is your sign to do a little café crawl).
If you’re visiting in April, the trees along the canals begin to blossom, giving the whole area a fresh and romantic spring atmosphere that’s ideal for slow travel days and golden hour strolls. Whether you’re popping out for brunch, browsing shop windows or just enjoying a relaxed wander, the Jordaan is quietly magical, a must for anyone wanting to experience the real, everyday charm of Amsterdam.
Treat Yourself to Fresh Stroopwafels in Central Amsterdam
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without trying one of the country’s most beloved sweet treats, stroopwafels! These delicious Dutch waffles are made from two thin, crispy layers of baked dough with a gooey caramel syrup filling in the middle. They originated in Gouda, Netherlands, during the late 18th or early 19th century and have since become a must-try snack for locals and tourists alike.
Traditionally, you enjoy stroopwafels by placing them on top of a hot cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. The heat gently softens the syrup and makes the treat even more indulgent.
Right in the heart of Amsterdam, you’ll find The Stroopwafel Shop, where you can enjoy a freshly made stroopwafel with your choice of delicious toppings like Nutella, chocolate sprinkles, or crushed nuts. The shop also sells packaged stroopwafels in adorable Dutch-themed boxes, making them perfect gifts or souvenirs. A pack costs around €7 a sweet deal for a tasty and thoughtful memento.
The shop itself is a visual treat. The interior is grand, with a stunning golden dome at its center, surrounded by shelves of charming products and gift items. It’s the kind of place that invites you to browse and linger. While you might encounter a line during peak times, it moves quickly, and the beautiful architecture offers plenty to admire while you wait.
And if you’re not a fan of stroopwafels (because same!), you’re still in luck—the Tony’s Chocolonely Superstore is just across the road! It’s another must-visit for any sweet tooth in Amsterdam.
Rijksmuseum Museum
One of the best, unmissable museums in Amsterdam is the Rijksmuseum Museum. The beautiful museum is the Netherlands national art gallery and is full of the best of dutch master art, from Van Gough to Vermeer. Famous paintings like ‘The Milkmaid’ and ‘The Night Watch’ are available to view in Rijksmuseum Museum alongside other incredible art pieces. In the 17th century collection you will find Jan Steen’s ‘The Feast of Saint Nicholas’ where if you look carefully you will see a stroopwafel painting in it. Rijksmuseum is also home to the largest art library in the Netherlands, so if you are an art and reader lover, Rijksmuseum is a must attend.
If you want to visit Rijksmuseum Museum, tickets are 25 euros. The museum is open daily from 09:00 till 17:00 and can be found at Museumstraat 1, Amsterdam.
