Growing up in the countryside of the UK I have seen a lot of beautiful scenery and experienced many, many walks through the countryside. With friends scattered all over the country from London to Newcastle Upon Tyne, I am constantly travelling around the UK and exploring new and unique destinations each time. Each city in the UK offers something different, from Manchester to London to Edinburgh and Glasgow the UK provides a lot for such a small country.

On the Road in the UK

When I turned 18, I began my BSc in Marketing and Psychology, an experience that introduced me to lifelong friends from all across the UK. Since graduation, I’ve been constantly exploring the UK, from scenic Lake District paddle board days, to vibrant London city trips, immersing myself in the culture, history, and hidden gems the UK has to offer. With friends scattered across the country I am lucky to be able to travel the UK and explore destinations like a local.

Favourite City: Edinburgh

Edinburgh is my favourite city in the United Kingdom. I’ve visited Edinburgh countless times, starting when I was a wee baby till the current day.

I want to reside in this lively Scottish city, immerse myself in its charm as a local, and eventually settle down with a home there.

Growing up in the UK

I’ve lived in the United Kingdom my entire life. Growing up in Stoke-On-Trent and moving to Lancaster at 18.

Over my 20 + years of living here, I’ve explored both the UK’s vibrant cities, like Manchester, Birmingham, and London, and its charming smaller towns, including Chester, Tenby, Ambleside, Padstow and Grassmere. From historic streets to scenic countryside, every destination has offered its own story.

London (3–5 days) – Big Ben, Tower of London, British Museum, theatre, and neighbourhoods like Camden or Notting Hill.

Edinburgh (2–3 days) – Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat, and the city’s famous pubs and festivals.

Lake District (2–4 days) – Scenic hikes, boat trips, Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth heritage.

Cornwall (3–4 days) – Beaches, dramatic cliffs, St Ives art scene, surfing in Newquay.

York (1–2 days) – York Minster, medieval streets, and Viking history.

From my experience, combining a city (like Edinburgh or London) with. countryside escape (like the Highlands or Cornwall) gives the riches UK trip.

London is the UK’s most visited holiday destination, attracting over 20 million visitors each year. It offers an unbeatable mix of culture, history, shopping, and theatre.

For domestic travellers, Cornwall and the Lake District are the most popular, with beaches, hiking trails, and family-friendly getaways.

If you’re short on time and want somewhere lively and exciting choose London. If you want a slower pace, head to Cornwall or the Lakes (and don’t forget your hiking boots!).

Do:

  • Queue politely – it’s a cultural must.
  • Say “please” and “thank you.”
  • Try local traditions like Sunday roasts (from a proper pub) or afternoon tea.
  • Explore beyond London into Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Don’t:

  • Talk loudly on trains or buses.
  • Assume tea is everyone’s favourite (coffee is huge too and although I have grown up in the UK my entire life I actually really do not like it).
  • Forget layers and an umberella – UK weather changes fast.
  • Confuse England with the whole UK.

Pro tip: small courtesies go a long way in British culture.

The UK is compact and often well connected:

Car hire – best for rural areas, coasts, and Scotland.

Trains – fast city-to-city (London – Edinburgh in 4h).

Coaches – cheap (National Express, Megabus, Trainline).

Flights – good for long distances like London-Belfast.

While it’s true that UK public transport can face disruptions, from rail strikes to engineering works and delays, in practice, most journeys run smoothly. If you want complete flexibility and peace of mind, hiring a car is often the best option, especially for exploring the countryside or regions with limited connections (though most places are well connected).

From my own experience of over 20 years using trains and buses in Britain, I can say that serious issues are rare (apart from strikes). In short: don’t be discouraged by the UK’s reputation for delays. Public transport remains one of the most convenient and sustainable ways to travel around the country, particularly for visitors focusing on major cities and popular destinations.

  • Explore castles, cathedrals, Roman baths, and royal palaces.
  • Enjoy Shakespeare, Harry Potter, and Premier League football.
  • Discover landscapes from Cornwall’s cliffs to Scotland’s mountains.
  • Explore the beautiful Lake District or the unique streets of London and Manchester.
  • And don’t forget – the UK has given the world some of its biggest music legends. For example, Liverpool is the birthplace of The Beatles, Manchester is world-famous for Oasis and The Smiths, and Glasgow is renowned for its vibrant live music scene. Even smaller towns, like Holmes Chapel in Cheshire where Harry Styles grew up, are worth visiting if you want to experience authentic British culture beyond the usual tourist trail.
