5 Weeks Interrailing & 11 Countries

Travel Girls Corner shares insights from my five-week Interrail adventure across Europe. From retro-cool Berlin and its Hat Jazz Bar to Lake Bled, Hallstatt, and Lake Como, each stop had its own charm. We savoured Krakow doughnuts, Split’s incredible fish, and Parisian reastraunts, navigating sleeper trains, packing, and sore feet along the way.

Sleeper Trains

Whilst interrailing you will likely decide to use a sleeper train at some point in your journey. They can be beneficial, efficient and get you from place A to be in quite literally a blink of an eye. If you are wondering what to expect on a sleeper train and how to prepare your in the right place as I have prepared a guide for you on how to have the best sleeper train experience.

Backpacks

Many of you will associate interrailing with backpacks and note that it is not the time for a suitcase. I think backpacks add fun to the trip and you really don’t need an expensive one if you can’t afford it or done think it’s worth the value. If you live in the UK get yourself down to Go Outdoors or pop onto Amazon and you will find the backpack I used for my entire 5 week trip – which is still now in perfect quality, and it only costs £30!

checkpoint 1
London
London was first on our radar when travelling Europe, it allowed easy access to Europe via the Eurostar.
checkpoint 2
PARIS
Second on our list was Paris! Known as one of the most romantic cities in the world, Paris is a simple, iconic and beautiful entry point to Europe.
Explore Paris
checkpoint 3
BERN
Next up was Bern! This was my second time exploring Bern and it didn’t disappoint, offering luscious local beers and free access to seeing some bears, Bern is a small but sweet city to admire.
Explore Bern
checkpoint 4
MILAN
Milan is known as one of the fashion capitals of the world. With the beautiful Duomo di Milano and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan has some incredibly stunning sights to see.
Explore Milan
checkpoint 5
LAKE COMO
Only an hour outside of Milan, is Lake Como, a stunning, romantic and sophisticated lake. With towns like Bellagio and Verenna, Lake Como was my second favourite destination on our interrail trip.
checkpoint 6
hAlLSTATT
After Lake Como, we visited the beautiful town of Hallstatt. Hidden away surrounding by Austrian mountains, Hallstatt feels like stepping into a fairytale.

checkpoint 7
VIENNA
Some of my most unique memories come from my time spent in Vienna. When visiting Vienna we experienced a beautiful performance at the Opera and had the most incredible seafood dinner afterwards.
Explore Vienna
checkpoint 8
PRAUGE
Prague was the next logical stop. The very first night we got there it was chucking it down with rain but it was one of my favourite memories of the entire trip. That night we visited Pragues castle and got drenched whilst doing so!
Explore Prague
checkpoint 9
BERLIN
Next up, was Berlin, which turned out to be my favourite (& my friend’s) favourite city of the entire trip. The retro vibes and history that Berlin offered was incredible and something I didn’t expect to experience from Berlin.
checkpoint 10
KRAKOW
Krakow was a recommendation made by my parents who had previously visited a couple of months prior. Personally, I found Krakow quite a chill city, certainly one where you don’t feel rushed and you can take your time exploring. I loved the polish dumplings – but don’t order too many as they are more filling than they look.

checkpoint 11
Budapest is one of my all time favourite cities and somewhere I will happy return too again in my life. I have now visited Budapest twice but it has charmed me every time.

checkpoint 12
LAKE BLED
If any of you watch The Grand Tour, then you might be aware that Lake Bled, was the final destination of the Eurocrash series. It was watching this series when I first got the desire to visit Lake Bled and the lake itself is stunning and a must visit! Unfortunately, I can’t say too much for the town, which was quite a disappointment in my opinion but it did have some nice cafes.

checkpoint 13
SPLIT
Nearing the end of our interrail trip we entered Croatia, and our first stop was split. Split was a lovely town to explore and allowed us to relax and eat some incredible food. We enjoyed wandering the old town and visiting the beach to relax.
Explore Split
checkpoint 14
DUBROVNIK
Our final destination was Dubrovnik. Which was the one place I requested to visit on our interrail trip. I had been to Dubrovnik when I was young and for years after it was my favourite destination, so I really wanted to experience it again with someone I cared about.

Interrail Travel FAQs

You have questions about Interrailing and we are here to answer them.

The best way to protect your bag while interrailing is to bring a sturdy bike lock. You can lock your bag to tables, racks, or bed frames, making it much harder for thieves to steal it. Add an extra lock onto the opening of your bag and you will have a solid system that should help keep your belongings safe and allow you to feel more at ease.

Yes, Interrailing is absolutely worth it. Even with the challenges it can bring, it’s an incredible experience and a privilege to be able to do it.

From my 2024 Interrail trip, the freedom to explore multiple cities, discover hidden gems, and immerse in local culture far outweighed any planning stress or challenges that came along the way. Watching landscapes change through the train window (or not as you are asleep), meeting fellow travellers (or not as your anti-social), and experiencing Europe at your own pace makes Interrailing not just a trip, but a true adventure worth it for everyone.

Interrailing is the ultimate European adventure – a single train pass that lets you travel through 33 countries and over 30,000 destinations without buying separate tickets.

You can choose from two types of passes:
– One Country Pass – perfect if you’re exploring just one place (like Italy or France).
– Global Pass – for hopping between countries across Europe (perfect for seeing more than one country).

It’s flexible, cost-effective, and honestly, one of the best ways to see Europe. You can buy your pass directly from Interrail’s official site. For a full guide on which pass to pick, check out my Interrail Pass breakdown here.

On my 5-week 2024 Interrail trip, I stayed in a mix of hostels, hotels, and apartments while travelling through Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. Interrailing isn’t just a ticket, it’s a gateway to spontaneous adventures, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences, adaptable to your pace, budget, and style.

Your Interrail Pass gives you access to most trains across Europe – from high-speed and regional trains to overnight sleepers. Some trains (like the Eurostar) need a seat reservation, while others let you just hop on and go. Always check if your train requires a seat reservation.
